Left Behind: The Dogs Rogers Animal Shelter Refused to Save

A year ago, three dogs were left behind in a Rogers home after their owners were arrested. The police told the neighbor it would be temporary. But days turned into weeks, and weeks became months. This kind neighbor stepped up, feeding the dogs and checking on them regularly, believing help from the city was on the way.

It never came.

One month after the arrest, one of the dogs gave birth to a litter of puppies in that home—alone, in the dark, with no power, no water, and no human contact beyond the neighbor's brief visits. He and the landlord contacted Rogers Animal Services repeatedly over the next year asking for help. They were turned away or ignored.

After nearly a year, the shelter finally responded—not to rescue the dogs, but to issue a deadline: remove the dogs from the property or face legal action.

Everyone involved understood what that meant. The veterinarian called the shelter to confirm the neighbor’s story and received that confirmation: euthanasia was the only option. Two dogs were put down. We were contacted just in time to save the third—a one-year-old puppy born into that home, now deeply fearful but slowly learning to trust and thrive.

This story is heartbreaking—but it’s not an anomaly.

It’s what happens when a shelter refuses to do its job.

A Pattern of Neglect

Rogers Animal Shelter continues to operate in isolation, behind closed doors, with no accountability and no interest in progress. While every other municipal shelter in Northwest Arkansas has moved toward modern, community-focused animal welfare models, Rogers remains stuck in the past—by choice.

Here’s what the data shows:

  • Rogers: 206 animals

  • Bentonville: 366

  • Lowell (smaller city): 409

  • Centerton (smaller city): 431

  • Springdale: 1,451

  • Fayetteville: 1,253

Despite being a growing city with a full-service animal control department, Rogers is taking in a fraction of the animals that other cities do. The result? Stray dogs are left roaming neighborhoods, injured animals go untreated, and residents are told to “let it go” when they call for help.

The Financial Cost of Failure

Rogers isn’t just falling behind in care—they’re wasting taxpayer dollars to do it.

According to the city’s own 2024 budget and intake numbers, Rogers is spending more than $3,000 per animal. By comparison:

• Springdale: $733 per animal

• Fayetteville: $748 per animal

  
  

That’s four times the cost—with far fewer services, lower adoption rates, and no community engagement.

City leaders have rejected disaster relief donations, ignored offers to help expand adoption and foster programs, and refused to accept support from citizens and rescues. Their refusal to collaborate is hurting animals and wasting resources.

The Cost to the Community

The burden has fallen—again and again—on private citizens and nonprofits. The neighbor who cared for those dogs. The rescues like Big Paws and Humane Society of the Ozarks who take in the animals Rogers refuses to help. The volunteers and fosters who want to give their time but are turned away.

In January, Rogers made headlines for leaving dogs outside during subzero temperatures, with no shelter or access to water. Water bowls were frozen solid. The city refused help until media coverage forced their hand. Even then, they turned away rescue partners who were ready to step in.

This isn’t leadership. This is damage control.

The Silence from City Hall

In March, more than 15 residents spoke out at a City Council meeting. They shared firsthand accounts, offered data, and demanded action. They asked for transparency, new leadership, and collaboration.

The mayor and city officials have said nothing in response.

They’ve announced plans to build a new shelter—but without new leadership and accountability, it will be a new building with the same failures.

This is not about personal grievances or isolated mistakes. This is about public trust, responsible use of taxpayer dollars, and the moral obligation to protect the animals and people of this community.
